Burnett Wins In Eighth Straight Start
The Pirates got another strong outing from A.J. Burnett on Thursday as the right-hander won his eighth-straight start.
He allowed three runs over six-plus innings in Pittsburgh's 5-4 victory over Philadelphia.
"The numbers might [exceed expectations]," manager Clint Hurdle said.
"But as far as coming in and competing, I don't have expectations. I was a young player, a bunch of expectations were put on me. I have experience with that. I tell them what I expect from them as far as preparation and focus and those things. Once they compete, A.J. has pitched well. The fact that he has run off eight in a row, that's significant, but there is a lot more that goes with that."
Giants Throw Franchise-Record Fourth Straight Shutout
Madison Bumgarner fired a one-hit gem as the Giants notched a franchise-record fourth straight shutout in a 5-0 win over the Reds.
Bumgarner didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning, and the Giants' starting pitchers have now gone a club-record 36 straight innings without allowing a run.
With the Dodgers' loss to the Mets, the Giants moved into sole possession of first place in the NL West.

Wise ran straight for the dugout after flipping into the crowd while trying to make a catch of a foul ball during the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Indians on Tuesday night.
"What was I supposed to do run back to left field?" Wise said. "I saw him looking at my glove so I just got up, put my head down and ran off the field."

Oswalt Wins In Rangers Debut
Roy Oswalt looked right at home in his debut with the Rangers on Friday night.
Oswalt pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Rangers won their seventh straight game, beating the Rockies 4-1, according to an ESPN.com report.
The 34-year-old Oswalt won his 160th career game and his first since beating Atlanta on Sept. 27. He allowed nine hits and one run in 6 2/3 innings.

Major League Baseball has rejected an appeal by the Mets to turn R.A. Dickey's one-hitter on Wednesday night into a no-hitter.
"It was nice that the Mets wanted to do it," the right-hander said.
"It was never my idea in the first place, but in truth, I'm fairly relieved that it ended up the way that it did because of my previous comments on it. ... If it would have an asterisk by it, it would become bigger than the no-hitter itself."
